The Barclay at SouthPark Embraces Giving Back to the Greater Community

Acts of Kindness Add Up to Healthier, Happier Lives for Residents of The Barclay at SouthPark

Not a day goes by at The Barclay At SouthPark that residents of the senior living community in Charlotte, North Carolina, are not doing something to spread love and support local charitable organizations.

The luxury rental senior living community offers many ways for residents to give back to the greater community. Those efforts, which are an integral part of the culture of The Barclay at SouthPark, are heartily embraced.

The Barclays Generous Food Drive

Representatives from Jewish Family Services received items from The Barclay at SouthPark’s generous food drive.

In August, residents donated more than 600 items—book bags, notebooks, pens and pencils—for students in need heading back to school.
In September, residents will participate in a food drive to collect canned goods, boxed foods and other items for people in the greater community facing hunger.

InReach-Smash 2023 in September, is a pickleball tournament which The Barclay At SouthPark sponsors. There will also be residents competing. The event raises funds for the non-profit organization that provides housing, jobs and other supports to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Residents have recently made donations totaling $2,000 to the Alzheimer’s Association. Residents and staff will participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s 2023 in October to raise even more funds for the organization. Their goal is $5,000.

Also, beginning in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, residents are joining together to knit or crochet prostheses for women who’ve undergone mastectomies.

As this list shows, volunteering and supporting those in need in the greater community is a priority at The Barclay at SouthPark.
Yesenia Velasquez, life enrichment director at The Barclay at SouthPark, says providing residents with various ways to volunteer or donate absolutely helps the greater community. Additionally, she says, it benefits residents by enhancing their emotional well-being.

“It maintains their sense of purpose. It lifts them up to do something good for the community,” she says. “Everyone benefits.”
Velasquez says she’s always impressed with how the residents of The Barclay respond to calls to help out local organizations in whatever ways they can.
“Being kind is one of the many ways in which the residents of The Barclay really shine,” she says.
